Making Life Easier By Putting You In Control – GMT
“Being in control of your life and having realistic expectations about your day-to-day challenges are the keys to stress management, which is perhaps the most important ingredient to living a happy, healthy and rewarding life.”
Marilu Henner
Alex Ferguson was manager of Manchester United Football Club for over 25 years. He was the most successful manager in their history and one of the most successful managers in the history of world football. He won everything. League titles, European cups and domestic cups. And he won them all many times. You can debate long and hard about his players, his teams or his tactics but you can’t argue with his success. He was truly second to none.
“The performance was great and we controlled the match.”
Alex Ferguson
Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012/2013 season and in an interview with Channel Four News after he retired, he was asked what the single most important ingredient of his success was. What was the one thing he put above all else. What did he say? “Control”. He tried to control everything and more specifically, he made sure he controlled everything he could control. He controlled his players on the pitch. He controlled them off the pitch. He even tried, on occasion, to control who they would marry! He controlled the media whenever he could and, infamously, he tried to control the BBC. In fact, he refused to speak to them for years.
Again, you can argue about the extremes he went to in his efforts to control his organisation but you can’t argue with his success. And you can’t argue about the value of being in control; at the very least, being in control of what you can control.
“Time lost is never found again.”
Benjamin Franklin
